The Petersfield Herald

The Petersfield Herald ran the following story on Friday 10 March 2006:

School Bear Hunt

Bertie the Bear, the much loved mascot of Rake C of E Primary School, has been lost on a recent trip to New Zealand.

He was accidentally left behind at Auckland Aiport during the February half term holidays, leaving pupils and teachers distraught.

Liz Studd, the school's bursar, immediately contacted the airport and sent out descriptions of Bertie Bear to all airlines, including Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. He is six years old, 30 cm tall and his eyes are brown.

She told The Herald: "We all miss him terribly. I immediately sent an email to my friend on the Isle of Wight, who forwarded it to her contacts in New Zealand to see if they could launch a campaign to find Bertie. So far we have had no luck.

The school have even set up a web site to help with the search at www.where-in-the-world-is-bertie-bear.co.uk.

"We are offering to pay the postal charges from anywhere in the world to return Bertie to us and we are also offering a reward to whoever finds him", Mrs Studd added.

Bertie has been a part of school life at Rake Cof E for the last six years, and usually lives in the recption area. Pupils and staff have taken him with them on their holidays all over the world and returned with lots of photographs to add to his scrap book.

Later they ran the following story:

NZ police join search for missing Bertie Bear

The disappearance of Bertie Bear, Rake Primary School's mascot, in New Zealand, has attracted a lot of attention.

The Herald told last week how Bertie had disappeared while on a trip to New Zealand with a member of school staff during the half-term holiday. (actually it was a pupil - webmaster).

After the Herald published the story, it was forwarded to a New Zealand newspaper, The Sunday Star Times, which decided to run the story.

There followed an immediate response from the local police, who say they are on the case and have assigned Constable Harry Bear to the case. It is said that he has a "don't mess with me" reputation and is set on Finding Bertie. He is pictured below arresting Barry Burglar Bear.

The email from the newspaper to the school described how police had established that no bear by the name of Bertie had departed through Customs and Immigration at Welllington Airport in the past month. They thereby dedeucted that Bertie was either clandestinely smuggled out of New Zealand or is still there. There was not a pawprint to be found and enquiries continue.
