Petersfield PostThe Petersfield Post ran the following story on Wednesday 1 March: Site is set for bear huntA village school has launched a international search for its much-loved mascot. Bertie the Bear has travelled thousands of miles and visited dozens of countries over the last six years. His exploits are a constant source of delight for pupils at Rake village school. But the travelling bear has gone missing after being left behind at Wellington airport in New Zealand during a half term holiday. A web site has been set up in a bid to trace him. The site appeals for anyone who knows his whereabouts to contact the school by email. It includes a description of him: height, 30cm; eyes, brown; age, six years. School bursar Mrs Liz Studd said "He is such a part of school life. He usually lives in the reception area, but whenever pupils or staff go on holiday, they take him with them. He has been all over the place - Vietnam, New Zealand and several times to the USA. We have a scrap book of photos of all the palces he has been to."Mrs Studd says that she had already been contacted by a wellwisher in New Zealand who had heard about Bertie's plight through a friend who is a teacher on the Isle of Wight. "She contacted Wellington airport, but there was no trace of him." A replacement mascot - Bernie, a New Zealand All-Blacks bear - is waiting in the wings as a replacement, but Mrs Studd said "We haven't given up hope that Bertie will turn up." |
